Habitat For Humanity 2010

British Group Employee
Lends Her ‘sweat equity’
to Habitat for Humanity

It may take time for a house to become a home, but Elaine Doyle knows
better than most the effort it takes to get a house made in the first place.
A volunteer with Habitat For Humanity since 2004, she’s been hands-on
with the building of sixteen different houses throughout the St. John’s
and Mount Pearl areas.

“You realize how hard it is to pull all this together,” she explains.
“The funding, the volunteers, the materials,, all of it. You’re just in awe
at the effort it takes.”

Elaine, who got involved with Habitat when she approached a build and simply asked those involved what they were working on, loves her time on site and the satisfaction she derives from it. But she’s quick to point out the new homeowners themselves are also very hands-on. Contrary to popular misconception, Habitat is not in the business of simply giving people houses.

“They might not need to come up with a down payment, but they need to commit to at least 600 hours
of ‘sweat equity’ to help get it built,” she says. “That’s where their friends and support come in.”

Support such as that of Elaine and many others involved with this worthy cause, a cause British Group
is proud to see one of its own involved in.
